Miryssa Nelson, a senior at Coloma High School, and a member of the Coloma Lady Comet varsity volleyball team this fall, is the Oct. 12, 2023 Tri-City Record Press Box Player of the Week.

Miryssa was nominated for the honor this week, because she has been a consistent leader on the court for her team, which currently possesses an 18-9-1 record on the season. In the Lady Comets most recent match, a Southwestern Athletic Conference – Lakeshore showdown with Bridgman, on Oct. 3, she was among the team leaders in several statistical categories, in a match that Coloma won in four tough sets: 30-32, 25-11, 26-24, 25-12. She was the team leader in assists with 35, while her stat line also featured 10 digs, five kills and three blocks.

So far this season, Miryssa has been lighting up the stat sheet every single night that her team competes, with her name being mentioned in each result that has been sent into our newspaper. This highlights her athletic talent and what she brings to make her team better. In matches that have been reported, her stat line for the year reads: 29 aces, 19 kills, 322 assists, seven blocks and 121 digs.

In addition to volleyball, Miryssa also competes on the softball diamond in the spring and has previously played basketball in the winter. Speaking of softball, last spring, she was one of the top hitters and starting pitchers for a Lady Comet team that seemingly showed improvement every night they took the field, which culminated with the ladies securing a district championship on their home diamond against their rivals from Watervliet. At the conclusion of the season, she was named a first-team all-conference recipient in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

In the classroom, Miryssa is the epitome of the words ‘student-athlete’, as she has been featured on the honor roll and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Congratulations on this great honor, Miryssa! We congratulate you on your achievements on the volleyball court so far this season and wish you and the Lady Comets good luck in the upcoming postseason!
