100 years ago – 1925
Coloma prepares for Commencement. Sixteen pupils in the eighth grade plan their program. The seniors are planning Baccalaureate, Commencement and Graduation exercises. The Senior Class Roll consists of 21 students.
Mrs. H. G. Krake, Coloma’s popular reader and entertainer, was called to Chicago. She entertained 700 ladies at the North End Club of Chicago.
The popularity of the C. & A. Tea Room was attested to last Sunday. Many who did not make reservations were turned away.
60 years ago – 1965
The Chamber of Commerce float won the Governor’s Trophy in the Blossomtime Parade. Riding atop the float were Queen Jacqueline Anderson and her court.
Mayor Glenn Randall will change offices with Gladwin’s Mayor in observance of Mayor Exchange Day. Commissioner Fred Munchow has been appointed official host for the Gladwin mayor.
Plans are being made for summer school. The elementary and high school will offer classes.
The old Curtis schoolhouse, when it became obsolete, didn’t fall into oblivion. It is serving the people of the district as a community building. It was built around 1865.
30 years ago – 1995
Dedication of the Coloma Firefighters Monument will be held in the Coloma City-Township Cemetery. Marion Smith spearheaded a public fund drive for the monument. The black granite monument stands five feet, two inches tall.
“Poppy Days” are held by the American Legion Auxiliary. Proceeds will directly aid veterans.
Preschoolers at Salem Lutheran School made recipe books for Mother’s Day. Some favorite recipes are: Cookies, Grilled Cheese, Pork Chops and Pizza. Mersaydes shared “Kindergarten Roundup Soup.” You put the soup can in the microwave for seven days.
Great Summer Fun: Wil-O-Paw Lanes is open for bowling. Door Prizes on Saturdays!
Erica Tarantino and Joshua Page-Wood have been selected for Girls and Boys State Representative, respectively.

News from the Hartford Day Spring
100 years ago - 1925
A radio at the Corner Shop with a loud speaker of sufficient volume to be heard a block or more has entertained Hartford folk who happened to be about the corner of Main and Center streets the past few days.
J. H. Conrad, who recently purchased the former Harry Stowe house at the corner of Main and Haver streets, has moved the house in two sections to lots in the southeast part of town and will remodel it into two residences. The Wolverine Oil Company, which recently purchased the property and sold the house to Conrad, has begun grading the lot in preparation for the erection of a new oil station.
80 years ago - 1945
Philharmonic Club was entertained last week at the home of Mrs. F. N. Williams. During the business meeting, the group decided to continue to support the music department of Percy Jones Hospital. Plans were begun for a tag day to benefit the project. “The Piano, Its Antecedents and Developments,” written by Mrs. Leland Davis, was read by Mrs. Floyd Lammon. Edna Mae Williams presented several selections on the piano.
Cakes, ice cream and nuts were served by the hostess at a lace-covered table decorated with tulips. Mrs. Lammon, retiring president, was presented with a gift from the Philharmonic Club. Mrs. Harry Burkholder will entertain the group at a recreation day in June.
60 years ago - 1965
An art exhibit will be held all next week at the Hartford art department. Art work on display includes work by grades six through twelve done in chalk, crayon, ink, water paint and collage. Crafts to be on display are made from copper wire, mosaic tile, clay and plaster. Adult art projects on display are in oil, chalk and water colors. The exhibit will be climaxed on Friday, May 21, in the high school gym with a massed band concert. All school bands will perform.

News from the Watervliet Record
90 years - 1935
Forty-four seniors will receive their diplomas on May 31, 1935, at the annual commencement exercises to be held at the local high school auditorium. What promises to be an address of high merit will be given by Dr. Galen Starr Boss, of Detroit, who will speak on “The Practical Objectives of American Education.” Dr. Ross comes to Watervliet highly recommended. He is very interested in public instruction and is an eminent speaker, giving as many as three hundred lectures a year.
60 years ago - 1965
The Sacred Heart program has informed the WHS Petite Chorale they have received Honorable Mention in a competition to record a new theme song for the Sacred Heart Hour. The contest was sponsored jointly by the Fred Waring Organization and the Sacred Heart Hour of St. Louis. WHS Petite Choral received their honor from one hundred and twelve entries. The WHS recording will be played over the Sacred Heart Program which is broadcast on 800 stations throughout the world.
Airman James E. Cole, Watervliet, has completed Air Force basic military training at Lackland AFB, TX. Airman Cole has been selected for technical training as an administrative specialist at the Air Training Command (ATC) School at Amarillo AFB, TX. The airman, a 1962 graduate of WHS, attended Lake Michigan College at Benton Harbor.
30 years ago - 1995
The Berrien County Intermediate School District eighth annual “Student Excellence” awards were presented to county students at the Mendel Center on May 1. Watervliet High School seniors Jennifer Arnt and Margaret Hannon were among the students receiving excellence awards in health occupations.
Junior Sergio Zanon is this week’s “Student of the Week” at WHS. He is an exchange student from Bunol, Spain. Sergio is active in track and was in the school musical. He enjoys team handball and riding motorcycles. His favorite class at WHS is advanced mathematics with Mr. Hecksel. He was honored with an English Award from the International Language School. He plans to attend college in either Spain or the United States to pursue a career in engineering.
