100 years ago – 1923
George Friday was elected president of the Township Sunday School Association. This unit comprises several Sunday schools of Coloma and Watervliet. Several hundred workers and pupils are represented.
The county road commissioner announced plans for the paving of the road from Twelve Corners into Benton Harbor. The west end, into Coloma, was completed in 1921. The material used will be either cement or brick.
The Coloma Theatre – EXTRA! The Watervliet High School faculty play, “Katy Did” will perform in two acts.
60 years ago – 1963
The State Bank of Coloma held its annual shareholder’s meeting. For the first time since 1927, Fred W. Cochrun, Chairman of the Board, was unable to attend due to illness. He also has been former owner and publisher of the Courier.
Plans for the construction of two special education rooms at Washington School were presented to the Board. These rooms will be used for elementary children.
Postmaster Gordon Young reminds rural patrons that mailbox approaches must be kept clear of snow.

30 years ago – 1993
A “4 municipality cooperative committee” has been formed. The purpose is to combine common services such as police departments, inspections and assessor services.
The bid of $210,000 placed on Deer Forest by Mary Hilton and family was accepted. The Hiltons are current owners of Diapers Unlimited. They plan to continue serving children now through owning Deer Forest.
The North Berrien Historical Museum will be open by appointment during the winter months. For an appointment, call 468-3330.
Coloma Elementary 1st Grade classrooms will hold a CUE Closure program. The program will be in the elementary gym.

News from the Hartford Day Spring
100 years ago - 1923
The Hartford Woman’s Club will hold a bake sale at the G.T. Chamberlin drug store. Proceeds from the sale will be used to assist a mountain government school at Dirk, Kentucky.
The thaw that removed the greater part of the covering of snow has turned the highways into a glare of ice and has made motoring extremely dangerous for the past few days. Motorists who have applied their brakes too quickly have found themselves spinning around the highway.
80 years ago - 1943
The Philharmonic chorus will present, “The Parade of the Wedding Gowns” at the Hartford Federated Church. Twelve young ladies will model wedding gowns, which are being furnished by people of the community.
A blaze originating in the basement of the Will Phillips home on East Oak Street early Sunday afternoon was extinguished shortly after the Hartford Fire Department arrived. The blaze was confined to a small area. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips noticed the smell of smoke. Upon investigation, Mr. Phillips found fire spreading rapidly through a partition near the furnace. He held the flames partially in check with a garden hose.
The Hartford Garden Club will hold its first meeting of the year at the home of Mrs. Warren Clark with Mrs. Dorothea Day presiding. Roll call was “My Favorite Verse from the Bible.” Mrs. Belle Mortimer read a very interesting paper on “Trees and Flowers of the Bible.” Mrs. Ethel Weed sang the song, “Trees.” Miss Mildred Smith read two chapters from an old book entitled, “Hunting Adventures in the North Woods.”
60 years ago - 1963
Only a month after the most severe blizzard in years, another blast of sub-zero weather, snow and high winds hit the Hartford area over the weekend. The village plow was at work most of Saturday night and until noon Sunday keeping town streets open, and the job of clearing away the snow has been going on steadily since then.
The Hartford High School senior band, directed by William Achterberg, will present its annual free winter concert at the high school gymnasium. A newly formed 18-piece stage band will play three popular numbers during the intermission.

90 years ago - 1933
The Watervliet Camp No. 3546 of the Modern Woodmen of America will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the organization on Feb. 3. The Modern Woodmen built, maintains and operates a $2,000,000 tubercular sanatorium located at Woodmen, CO. Ten thousand members have been treated free of all cost.
“Unless the legislature now in session enacts measures that will offset the tax revenue loss that will incur through state adoption of the 15 mill tax limitation amendment, the Watervliet Public Schools will be forced to operate on either a part time basis for the 1933-34 school year or adopt a school calendar of not more than six months,” R. R. Shelters, superintendent of schools, declared this week.
60 years ago - 1963
Army National Guard Pvt. Lloyd R. Warman Jr. recently completed an 11-week course in artillery tracked vehicle maintenance under the Reserve Forces Act program at the Artillery and Missile Center, Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Mr. and Mrs. Marion Cobb became parents of a six pound, nine and one half ounce girl, Stacy Marie, on Jan. 19, 1963.
John Rogers, Albion College junior, was one of a quartet which won the 16th annual men’s quartet sing for Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
30 years ago - 1993
Watervliet’s Academic Challenge team went to 2-0 for the season with a 235-115 win over Brandywine High School. The Panthers dominated the match, winning the first half by 50 points, the 60-second round by 30, and the second half by 40. Senior captain, Scott Gatchell was high-point person.
Congratulations are in order for senior Bret Frontzcak, who has been selected as “Student of the Week” at Watervliet High School for Jan. 27, 1993. Bret has been involved in many activities in his four years at WHS. In addition to playing varsity baseball for the Panthers, Bret also plays American Legion baseball in the summer and umpires Little League. He is also a member of the varsity basketball squad. His other educational opportunities at WHS included Student Council and National Honor Society.
