Understanding COPD and how the air quality index affects it

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious and growing health concern in the United States. As of 2005, it was the fourth leading cause of death in the country, claiming over 125,000 lives. In 2006 alone, it led to approximately 672,000 hospitalizations and 1.4 million visits to emergency rooms. COPD is a progressive lung disease that includes both chronic bronchitis and emphysema. These conditions frequently occur together and are characterized by a persistent obstruction of airflow, which makes breathing difficult.
