Surfari Joe’s Indoor Wilderness Waterpark temporarily shut down due to a vandalized maintenance room causing ventilation malfunction

A disgruntled former employee of Surfari Joe’s Waterpark in Watervliet is believed to have broken into the building’s maintenance closet causing over $10,000 in damages.

The police, fire, and health departments were all called to the waterpark on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023 after a ventilation malfunction that caused the waterpark to close, after guests of the park began to get sick. Police are now investigating the extensive damage that occurred at the waterpark located at 8258 Arnt Blvd., which resulted in the malfunction.

A spokesman for Peachtree Inn & Suites and Surfari Joe’s Indoor Wilderness Waterpark confirmed that “there was an act of vandalism by a previous employee. We are still waiting confirmation from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department regarding this matter.”

“In the upcoming days we will continue to repair the damages to make and keep our establishment a safe and friendly environment for everyone to enjoy,” the owners wrote. “We want to thank everyone for their support during this unfortunate time.”

The investigation is being led by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department. The Tri-City Record has been in contact with a spokesperson for the hotel and more information will be published as soon as it becomes available.
