The 50th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald; WHS Alumna Ellen Tober to swim in Stage 12 of memorial event this weekend

On November 10, 2025, the maritime world will mark the 50th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. Launched in 1958, the 729‑foot bulk carrier was the largest ship on the Great Lakes and became a symbol of industrial might and engineering prowess. Carrying over 26,000 tons of taconite iron ore, the vessel departed from Superior, Wisconsin, destined for Detroit, when it was caught in a fierce storm that ultimately led to its loss.
