When your family faces a tight month, you cut back. You skip the restaurant. You delay the purchase. You make it work with what you have. You don’t walk into the bank and demand a bigger credit limit.
Governor Whitmer apparently missed that lesson. Last week, her team rolled out an $88.1 billion spending plan for the coming fiscal year. To cover the tab, her proposal includes roughly $800 million in new taxes on everything from cigarettes and vaping products to sports betting and digital advertising, plus a $400 million withdrawal from Michigan’s rainy-day fund.
