Glad Peach of a Good Time in 5/10k Walk, Run, Bike Event The

Glad Peach 5k and 10k run, walk, and bike event was held Saturday, August 6 under ideal conditions. The weather was beautiful, volunteers were present en masse, and spectators lined the course to cheer on their friends and family. Nik Pettinga, 13, of Saugatuck was the overall men’s division winner of the 5k run with a time of 18:55.5. Catherine Klank, pushing her 11-month old daughter Molly in a stroller, was the top female finisher of the 5k run. Klank finished with a time of 20:14.47, good 10th overall. In the 10k run, Justin Smith of Bangor finished first with a time of 38:10.09. Crystal Cowgill was the top female 10k runner. Cowgill, of Hartford, finished with a time of 42:57.19. Bruce Brantley of Berrien Springs finished first in the 5k walk with a time of 34:11.83. Christine Washington was the top female finisher, crossing the tape second overall. Washington, of Stevensville, had a time of 39:42.91. Of the five participants in the 10k walk, Nada Kramp of Stevensville finished first with a time of 1:06:41.42. Martin Falsey was the second overall finisher. The Coloma resident had a time of 1:14:25.09. Four bikers took to the course for the 5k. Martin Quigley Jr. of Coloma successfully defended his age division win from last year and won the whole thing. His time of 15:19.06 was tops. 16:32.48. Top female finisher was Colleen Williams of St. Charles, Illinois in sixth place overall. She had a time of 24:50.27.

Fall High School sports began practice this week
After nine weeks of summer break, high schools sports fans are chomping at the bit for the 2016-2017 seasons to begin. But, wait no more, sports fans! Practice opened this week for all high school fall sports. Previews of our area teams, coaches, and rosters will be featured in the next two press box columns. This week, we’ll take a look at the sports, their opening contests, some important scheduled games, and dates for state competition. Keep in mind, schedules are subject to change and contests may be added. Visit each school’s athletics page for up-to-date information and game/contest times.
Coloma Varsity Football
Coloma opens their football season with two back-to-back Thursday games. They take to the road on August 25 to face perennial Southwestern Athletic Conference powerhouse Schoolcraft. The Comets then follow that game with their home opener on September 1. They welcome the Tigers of Gobles to the gridiron. Coloma will take on Watervliet at home in week three competition in their first Friday night game under the lights on September 9. The Coloma Boosters are already working on a tailgating party for the event. Coloma will host five home games (their opponents being Gobles, Watervliet, Fennville, Kalamazoo Hackett, and Eau Claire).
Coloma Varsity Volleyball
Coloma opens their 2016 volleyball season in tournament action on Saturday, August 20 in Kalamazoo. The squad then welcomes Parchment to the CHS gym for the Lady Comets’ home opener on Monday, August 29. Coloma will welcome SAC rival Hartford on Tuesday, September 20 before traveling on Red Arrow Highway to Watervliet on Thursday, September 22 for quad action against the Panthers, Kalamazoo Hackett, and Kalamazoo Christian.
Coloma Cross Country
The Comet cross country team takes to the trails on Saturday, August 20 in Lawton for their first meet of the season. They follow that with a trip to Paw Paw on Tuesday, August 30.
Coloma Varsity Boys’ Soccer
Coloma kicks off their soccer season on Wednesday, August 24 in Berrien Springs. The squad will host their first tourney of the season on Saturday, August 27 with games at 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. The Comets first regular home game will take place on Monday, August 29 against Bangor.
Hartford Varsity Football
The Hartford Indians will open their football season on Friday, August 26 in Watervliet. Six days later, the Indians will host their home opener on September 1 as they face Delton Kellogg. With only four home games this year, including a three-game home stand in the middle of the season, Hartford fans will need to have their gas tanks full. DK, Gobles, Bangor, and Galesburg-Augusta will all be at home, and Watervliet, Schoolcraft, Lawton, Eau Claire, and Constantine will be on the road.
Hartford Boys’ Soccer
The schedule is full for Hartford’s boys’ varsity soccer team. The squad opens their season at home on Wednesday, August 24 against South Haven. They follow that with another four games at home, including a match against Coloma on Wednesday, September 14. The team‘s final four regular season games are all on the road at LMC, Delton Kellogg, Kalamazoo Christian, and Richland Gull Lake.
Hartford Volleyball
Hartford will be ready to set, spike, and dig on Saturday, August 20. They begin their season at Lawton in tournament action. The Indian squad will host their home opener on Thursday, September 8 in quad action and will take on Watervliet Tuesday, September 13 in Panther territory. Hartford will head to Coloma for play on Tuesday, September 20. Hartford Varsity Cross Country Hartford cross country stars will lace up their shoes on Friday, August 19 for their first event of the new season. The Indians will head to Lawrence for a meet. The big Bridgman Invitational is set for Wednesday, August 24 and Hartford’s cross country teams will have a presence there as well. The red letter date for Hartford cross country is Thursday, September 8. The school will welcome fellow cross country runners to the Teske Invitational. Then, the squad will join Coloma and Watervliet at the SAC jamboree on Wednesday, September 14 in Decatur.
Watervliet Varsity Football
Watervliet’s gridiron season begins with a two-game home stand, starting Friday, August 26 with a game against rival Hartford. Game two of the 2016 season will feature a battle royale against Schoolcraft on September 1. The Panthers hit the road for three consecutive games, including one against Coloma on Friday, September 9. Watervliet’s five home games also include contests against Constantine, Delton-Kellogg, and Decatur. The team certainly fared well in the scheduling department. The Panthers will enjoy home field advantage against the SAC conference giants they face. Their road games will take them to Kalamazoo Hackett, Fennville, and Bangor.
Watervliet Volleyball
The Lady Panthers of Watervliet varsity volleyball will open their season Wednesday, August 24 on the road at Lake Michigan Catholic. The squad remains on the road until their home opener on Thursday, September 8. Watervliet will host Coloma, Kalamazoo Hackett, and Kalamazoo Christian in quad action. On Tuesday, September 13, the Lady Panthers welcome Hartford to the volleyball court. Watervliet will travel to Coloma for another SAC conference meet on Tuesday, September 27.
Watervliet Cross Country
Watervliet boys’ cross country will look to run away with the championship title at their first event of the 2016 season: the Viking Stampede Invitational in Niles on Friday, August 19. Both the girls’ and boys’ cross country teams will hit the course on Wednesday, August 24 in the Bridgman Invitational and will join fellow runners on Thursday, September 8 at the Hartford Teske Invitational before heading off to the SAC Lakeshore Jamboree in Decatur on Wednesday, September 14.
Southwest Athletic conference division standings
Coloma, Hartford, and Watervliet are all members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Depending on the sport, their division of play and opponents may vary. In cross country, the SAC is divided into two divisions: Lakeshore and Valley. All three of our local teams are part of the SAC Lakeshore division. The Lakeshore division also includes teams from Bangor, Decatur, Eau Claire, Fennville, Lawrence, and Saugatuck. In SAC volleyball, there are three divisions represented: Lakeshore, Central, and Valley. Coloma, Hartford, and Watervliet all belong to the SAC Lakeshore division. Football within the SAC is divided into three divisions: Lakeshore, Central, and Valley. Coloma and Watervliet join Constantine, Delton-Kellogg, Fennville, and Kalamazoo United in the Lakeshore division. Hartford is part of the Central division along with Bangor, Galesburg-Augusta, Gobles, Lawton, and Schoolcraft. With fall sports beginning soon, get ready for a wild ride on the field, court, and course!
Grand City Skiers take center stage on Paw Paw Lake
The Paw Paw Lake Yacht Club will be the place to be on Sunday, August 14 at 2 p.m. The Club, in an event sponsored by the Paw Paw Lake Association, will welcome the Grand City Show Skiers, a water skiing troupe out of Grand Rapids. The Skiers are returning for another year of flips, skips, and dazzling water dancing. Their acrobatic moves across the water will have you oohing and aahing. The show can be viewed from the yacht club’s outdoor seating area. Or, feel free to drop anchor and watch the exhibition from your water worthy vessel. The club will also offer free hot dogs, brats, chips, and non-alcoholic drinks between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The GCSS recently performed at the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival. The group’s purpose is to promote water skiing as a sport as well as introduce the sport to community members who do not water ski. Check out the show on Sunday!

Travis Bolin with Arizona League
As of August 7, Travis Bolin has added to his minor league cache of play with two games as part of the Arizona League Rangers. On Thursday, August 4, Bolin went 0-4 in his first outing with the AZL team. Bolin turned things around on Sunday, August 7 after the right-handed enterfielder smacked two hits in four at bats. Bolin currently holds a .275 batting average in his minor league career. Bolin has appeared in 18 games with two teams. He spent 16 games with the Spokane Indians of the Northwest League. Bolin is on tap to play 10 games over the next 12 days.

Hamlin earns first Sprint Cup road course victory at Watkins Glen
Denny Hamlin won Sunday’s Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen International, earning his first Sprint Cup road course victory and second win of the 2016 season. The last few laps of the race proved the most exciting. Kyle Busch, who had been leading, swung wide two different times and lost valuable track position. Brad Keselowski banged his way to a top five finish, tapping Martin Truex Jr. out of the way and into the wall. Hamlin gunned his way out of the final turn to take the checkered flag. He led 10 laps after starting in the sixth position. The 22nd race of the season featured nine lead changes and eight caution periods. Twenty-eight drivers finished on the lead lap. Last year’s summer winner at the Glen, Joey Logano, finished second. He led eight laps. Keselowski took third after leading 28 laps. AJ Allmendinger finished fourth and earned his second top five finish of the season. Tony Stewart, in his final year of racing in the Sprint Cup series, was fifth. Jeff Gordon, subbing for the third consecutive time for concussed Dale Earnhardt Jr., finished 14th. Race pole sitter Carl Edwards led 25 laps en route to a 15th place finish. Other drivers who led laps include: Kyle Busch (4), Martin Truex Jr. (1), Kurt Busch (3), and Danica Patrick (11). Keselowski’s nudge of Truex Jr. bumped (pun intended) him to the number one spot in the driver standings. He replaced Kevin Harvick in the top spot, although Harvick only trails by nine points. Kurt Busch and Kyle Busch hold spots three and four, while Carl Edwards rounds out the top five. The teams depart for Bristol Motor Speedway. The Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race will take place on the oval short track Saturday night. That is good news for many Michiganders, as the teams then head to Michigan International Speedway the following week for racing action close to home.
Shane Cottle throttles his way to Open Classic win; Pena, Frye and Mayer victorious in wild night at Hartford Speedway

Lane Automotive MTS Sprint Cars made their second and final appearance of the season at the wide oval with USAC standouts Landon Simon, Shane “The Throttle” Cottle and “Mad” Max McGhee in attendance. Steve Irwin and Cottle would start the twenty lap main event on the front row. Joe Bares would pressure Cottle’s #57 through lap traffic and pull side by side before Shane would adjust his line to pull away. In the closing laps Cottle would find himself jammed in behind lap cars allowing Bares one final shot to claim the top spot, but on this night, Bares would have to settle for second. Landon Simon who won the non-wing portion of the King of Michigan came home a distant third, Max McGhee fourth and Dusty Shriver fifth. Curt Spalding’s domination of the Jack’s Excavating & Trucking UMP Modified division the last two years has been unparalleled, but in recent weeks the competition has managed to close the competitive gap starting with Zeke McKenzie’s win during the July 15th event. Friday Steven Pena would take the lead from Jesse Bitterling on the second lap, hold on through four restarts and still saw little challenge from the competition for his first win of the year. Zeke McKenzie would come home second, Curt Spalding third, Joel Dick fourth and Bobby Stremme fifth. For the first time in a decade the Puhrman Hauling & Excavating UMP Stock Cars would present enough cars to run a B-Main. Honorable mentions to Austin Garrett, Ryan Gillaspy, Jeremy Snow, Christopher Clayton, Jeremy Pletz and Jessie Scott after a hard impact with the turn four wall would fail to make it into the main event. In quite possibly the most exciting and unpredictable Stock Car event of the year Josh Frye would go wheel to wheel with Jerrad Krick. Frye in his familiar #44 would make several attempts to pass Krick’s #99k before throwing caution to the wind for a kamikaze slide job out of the fourth turn to do what no one has managed all season, pass Jerrad Krick for the lead. Three laps after having the lead snatched away Krick would retire pit side for a flat right front tire. Josh Frye would take the win, Jake Hoffman second, Andy Barr third, Calvin Peek fourth and Jim Sternaman fifth. Federated Auto Parts Cyber Stocks would see a spirited battle play out between Paul Nelson and Rich Loraff. Loraff, easily the best driver in the field to have never won a feature event, dominated the event. After leading thirteen circuits around the wicked half mile Paul “Fireball” Nelson would draw to the rear bumper making contact and crashing both cars out of the race handing the lead to rookie Jacob Ferguson. Ferguson’s Ford would take the green for a two lap shootout before being overhauled by last place starter Andrew Mayer who would take his second consecutive win. Ferguson would come home a career best second, Ryan Price third, Milton McDonald fourth and Brooke Derrick rounded out the Top-5. Friday and Saturday August 12th & 13th Hartford Speedway will forgo its’ traditional oval track program for south west Michigan’s premiere off road event! The speedway will be converted into an off road course utilizing parts of the wicked half mile and the infield. Single day tickets are $25/day or purchase weekend passes for $40.
