True wisdom
Proverbs 3:7 reads, “Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.” King Solomon wrote these words. He was a wise king. He wanted his people to look to God for guidance, and not to their own wisdom. Why? Because, when left to our own devices, our wisdom tends to lead us astray.
There are two lessons I find myself taking away from King Solomon. The first is one that we can easily forget: it is important to seek out fellowship and community instead of “going it alone.” A community can carry each other’s burdens (Gal. 6:2), encourage one another (1 Thess. 5:11), and provide help when we feel low (Eccl. 4:9-10). The wisdom of this world tells us that we can do anything we set our minds to. The tools we use—our phones, social media, even the use of A.I. to answer questions and generate images—these tools push us further into isolation, into a world of our own wisdom. We must be sure to preserve fellowship and community.
