WILLIAM “BUTCH” HANSEN


William “Butch” Hansen, 79, of Coloma, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022 at Woodland Terrace in Coloma.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma. Cremation has taken place. Butch was born March 28, 1943 in Chicago to Stanley and Sheila Hansen. The family moved to southwest Michigan several years later.

Butch was a graduate of Coloma High School and then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at Western Michigan University and then his master’s degree at Michigan State. His teaching career began in Benton Harbor and then moved to the Watervliet Public Schools system where he taught at the high school level for 30 years before retiring in 1998.

In his personal time, Butch was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed both hunting and fishing. He was also an accomplished cook when it came to preparing wild game for dinners. Butch loved living on, as well as boating on, big Paw Paw Lake and was a past member of the Paw Paw Yacht Club. Butch was a very social person who could initiate a conversation with anyone he met. He made many friends over the course of his lifetime and will be missed by all.

Butch is survived by his wife Joanna, whom he married in June of 1971; his son Craig Hansen of Coloma; his daughter Kerry (Justin) Mowery of Fort Wayne, IN; his sister Virginia Boness of St. Joseph; and four grandchildren, Emily and Olivia Hansen, and Jared and Kaleb Wooley.
