NANCY J. McKIE Nancy J. “Pete” McKie, 86 of Coloma, passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020 at her residence.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2 at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma where visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will follow in Coloma Cemetery. Donations in memory of Nancy may be made to the Humane Society of Southwest Michigan, Coloma United Methodist Church, or the Coloma American Legion, Post 362. Those wishing to leave an online message of remembrance may do so at www.duffieldpastrick.com. Nancy was born June 26, 1934 in Benton Harbor to Chancie and Hilda (Stermer) Krugh. She retired in 1996 as a cook from Coloma Community Schools, was a member of the Coloma United Methodist Church and the Coloma American Legion Post 362, Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband Edward “Buck” McKie Jr., whom she married March 15, 1951; five children, Joe (Karen) McKie, Karol (Kenneth) Stanisz Sr., Tim (Amanda) McKie, Mark (Karen) McKie and Karen McKie. Also surviving is a sister Leona Barowicz, a brother Corwin (Elaine) Krugh, nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and her canine companion “Pogo”. Nancy was preceded in death by three grandsons, Kenneth Stanisz Jr., Sean and Christian McKie, and a sister Beverly Schmidt.
PAUL V. RYAN Paul V. Ryan, 93, of Coloma, passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020 at his home.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the North Berrien Senior Center, Caring Circle or the Apostolic Tabernacle Church. Those wishing to leave a message or share a memory with the family online may do so at www.duffieldpastrick.com. Paul was born Nov. 24, 1926 in LaCross, Arkansas to Oscar and Minnie Ryan. He moved to Coloma in 1947 and spent the next 60 years on his family farm. He enjoyed traveling and hunting in his free time and was a member of the NRA. Paul also spent a lot of time fishing with his son Greg and had many fishing tales to tell about their time on Lake Okeechobee in Florida. Paul was a people person. He was a former coach with the Coloma Little League, a life member of the Horticultural Society of Michigan and a longtime member of the Apostolic Tabernacle Church in Benton Harbor. Paul is survived by his wife Billie whom he married on June 25, 1949; his son Greg (Sandy) Ryan of Denver, Colorado; his sisters Alice (Don) Boyer of Benton Harbor and Virgie Davis of Lawrence; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he adored. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Edith Brewer, Thelma Redding and Armilda Redding; and his brother Carl Ryan.
JAMES C. McQUEEN Jim’s life began October 2, 1935, in Portageville, MO. When Jim was around 10 years old his dad was offered a job in Southwest Michigan and they made their home in Coloma. His dad bought acreage and Jim enjoyed helping his parents farm the property.
Jim graduated from Coloma High School and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. After serving his country Jim went to work at Kaywood Corp where he met Mary English and shortly after they married. In Jim’s spare time he enjoyed singing and listening to country music, watching football especially Notre Dame and University of Michigan, and sharing stories about his experiences from the service when he was overseas. Jim loved to box and play horse shoes and earned many trophies and recognitions for both including Golden Gloves. Jim also enjoyed snowmobiling and was a member of the Blizzard Brigade Snowmobile Club. Jim’s greatest joy was his family which includes: his loving wife Mary McQueen; four children, Bob (Kim) McQueen, Debbie (Mark) Amis, David (Victoria) Gould, and Jeff Gould; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Aline Moore and Shelby (Stephen) Kelbel; a brother-in-law Gene Tutton; and several nieces and nephews. Jim died Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. His parents Leo and Ruby (Yarbrough) McQueen, two sisters Joyce Tutton and Jerry Rothaar, and two brothers-in-law Jim Rothaar and Jim Moore precede Jim in death. Funeral services will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 2, 2020 at Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet at 2:45 p.m. with visitation prior starting at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in North Shore Memory Gardens. EVA JANE JOHNSON Eva Jane (Huffman) Johnson, 87, of Hartford, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020, at Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo. Mrs. Johnson was born April 8, 1933, in Ballard County, the daughter of Henry Otis Huffman and Dovie Marie (Edging) Huffman. She retired from Kayo Products of Benton Harbor. She loved to garden, her farm, shopping, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Full Gospel Assembly for many years.
Survivors include: children – Gaytha (Matthew) Keech of Hartford; James (O Kyung) Johnson Jr. of Lakewood, Washington; Lisa (Donald) Tackett of Watervliet; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; brothers – Henry (Barbara) Huffman of Pullman and Douglas (Sherry) Huffman. She is preceded in death by her husband, James E. Johnson, whom she married on Oct. 11, 1958; also her parents, her daughters, Donna Huddleston and Deborah Kling, a son, Timothy Johnson and 3 sisters and 3 brothers. Visitation was Tuesday, Sept. 29, with a service on Wednesday, Sept. 30 held at Full Gospel Assembly in Hartford. Pastor Shannon Truelove officiated. A graveside service was held at Fairview Cemetery in Watervliet. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Hartford Public Schools Foundation for Quality Education. BARBARA JOYCE SMITH Barbara’s life began Nov. 11, 1948, in Watervliet, Michigan. She enjoyed being a lifetime area resident in her corner of Michigan. Barbara worked at Hilltop Grocery in St. Joseph in the meat department for over 30 years right up until they closed. She then went to work as a receptionist at the YWCA in St. Joseph. In her spare time she enjoyed golfing, bicycling; she bowled on leagues for several years, and was an avid reader. Barbara also enjoyed giving back to her community through volunteering for projects such as bowling for the blind, handicapped horseback riding, and many others. Barbara leaves behind five siblings, Janet (Ron) McGath, Shirley (Mike) Kupiecki, John (Barbara) Smith, Michael (Terrie) Smith, and Ann Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews to cherish her memory. Barbara died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020 at Spectrum Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph. Her parents, John and Rose (Daly) Smith precede Barbara in death. RICHARD DUDAY Richard Duday was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 2, 1934 to Walter Sr. and Angeline Duday. The family moved to Hartford, Michigan, where Richard attended high school. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Engineering. Being a part of the ROTC, Richard entered the U.S. Army (Corps of Engineers), where he had many overseas tours to Germany, Thailand and Viet Nam. Having served honorably for 20 years, Richard attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. His awards and decorations include The Bronze Star, The Meritorious Service, The Army Commendations, National Defense Service, Armed Forces Expeditionary, Viet Nam Campaign and Viet Nam Service medals. He also earned The Army Ranger tab and Airborne Wings.
After retiring from the military, he worked as Housing Manager for expat housing, Government of Bahrain. After returning to the U.S., Richard accepted the position as Division Chief (T&ES) for the City of Alexandria, Virginia, where he worked for over 15 years. Richard moved to Prescott with his wife, Mary, and had resided there for over 20 years. He was an avid collector and enjoyed traveling and reading. Richard was father to four children -Michael, Christopher, Gregory (deceased) and Melanie (deceased); and was stepfather to Christopher Malter (deceased), Robyn Malter and Katherine Lipinski. He was father-in-law to Martin Ochotta, Rebecca Spitzer and Eric Lipinski and grandfather to Alexis Duday and Rian and Adam Lipinski. He was brother to Walter Jr. (deceased), brother-in-law to Joan Duday and uncle to nieces, Sandra, Anna, Mary Frances and nephews, Steven and Edmond. Richard passed away on May 20, 2020 at the V.A. hospice. A Celebration of Life is being held Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020, 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Watervliet.
