Every October, pink ribbons appear on storefronts, social media pages, clothing, fundraising merchandise and community displays as people come together to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The color pink has become a powerful symbol of hope, remembrance, courage and the ongoing fight against breast cancer. Behind every ribbon, however, is a story that deserves to be heard.

Breast cancer is more than a month of awareness campaigns, fundraising walks and inspirational messages. It is a diagnosis that can change a person’s life in an instant, affecting physical health, emotional well-being, family relationships, employment and financial security. It is the fear that accompanies an unexpected phone call, the uncertainty of waiting for test results, the exhaustion of treatment and the difficult reality of trying to maintain a sense of normalcy while life feels anything but normal.

Going beyond the pink ribbon means looking at the realities of breast cancer, understanding the importance of early detection, recognizing the challenges survivors face and remembering those whose lives have been forever changed by the disease.

Beyond awareness

Breast cancer develops when cells in breast tissue begin growing abnormally and form a cancerous tumor. Although it occurs most frequently in women, men can also develop breast cancer. It can affect people of different ages, backgrounds and health histories.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women in the United States, aside from skin cancers. Advances in screening, diagnosis and treatment have improved outcomes for many patients, but breast cancer continues to claim lives every year.
