Boys basketball, bowling teams tip off winter sports this week!

This week will begin the craziness of seasonal athletics for the Coloma Comets / Lady Comets, as the winter sports season begins with the boys varsity basketball team and both high school bowling teams being the first squads in action.

The 2023-24 winter sports calendar began when the men’s / women’s bowling teams traveled to Joey Armadillo’s in Niles on Monday, Nov. 27, for non-conference matchups against Niles Brandywine. The two squads, under the direction of head coaches Gregory Shaffer (men’s) and Tyler Cantrell (women’s) will be busy with conference tilts the following week, traveling to Saugatuck on Tuesday, Dec. 5, before hosting Parchment at Striker’s Bowl (in Saint Joseph), on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Joining the bowling teams in action this week will be the men’s basketball team, as the Comets will tip their season off with a road trip to Niles Brandywine on Friday, Dec. 1, for a matchup with the Bobcats. Head coach Curtis McFall and his squad will begin the year with four straight contests on the road, following their opener with games at Galesburg-Augusta (Tuesday, Dec. 5), Bridgman (Friday, Dec. 8) and Benton Harbor (Tuesday, Dec. 12). The Comets will finally open their home slate when they host Fennville in conference action on Friday, Dec. 15.

The week of Dec. 3 – 9, the Coloma Lady Comet varsity basketball team and the Comet varsity wrestling team will begin action, making it five of the six winter squads that will have begun regular season action. On the basketball court, the Lady Comets will start their game schedule with a pair of home conference tilts against Martin (Tuesday, Dec. 5) and Bridgman (Thursday, Dec. 7), while the Comet wrestlers will open their schedule with a conference quad at Allegan on Wednesday, Dec. 6, which also includes Delton Kellogg and Watervliet. They will also wrestle in the Vicksburg Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 9.

Finally, fans of loud cheers and tumbling passes can look forward to the debut of the Coloma Lady Comet competitive cheerleading team. However, while the team is currently practicing, they will not enter competition until Saturday, Dec. 16, when they compete in the Gobles Cheer Bash.

As usual, the Tri-City Record and the Coloma Press Box will be your number one source for all things Comet / Lady Comet athletics this winter! Stay tuned to our newspaper for all the sports action that is set to be contested over the next few months – we know you are going to be excited to see how well the teams compete.

As always, GO GREEN! GO GOLD!
