COLOMA GIRLS BASKETBALL... The winter sports season is underway, and the Lady Comets are hitting the hardwood running! Under duress from a Bridgman defender, Coloma’s Tatum Arend (20) takes the ball to the hoop, trying to score the layup in the recent matchup between the Lady Comets and the Lady Bees. Unfortunately, the shot did not find the bottom of the net, one of many good looks that didn’t fall in a 26-19 loss. (TCR photo by Jerrod Birmele)

Boys basketball record falls to 0-3

The Coloma Comet varsity boys basketball team took the court two times during their second week of action, as they played in a pair of conference matchups to keep their season moving forward. The men were coming into the week fresh off a defeat to a defending state semifinalist, leaving the team with a record of 0-1 early on in this campaign.

In their first game of the week, which saw Coloma travel to Galesburg-Augusta to take on the Rams on Tuesday, Dec. 5, the Comets looked for revenge against a team that defeated them nearly a year prior, in double overtime. In a microcosm of what the week would entail, Coloma led after the first, second and third quarters, only to see the game slip away in the closing minutes, as Galesburg-Augusta took home the victory in overtime, 62-61.

Coloma traveled to Bridgman to take on the Bees on Friday, Dec. 8. The Comets looked to rebound, from the disappointment of three days prior, against a squad that they played twice last year; the team in the orange and navy (Bridgman) won both meetings by 25 and 28 points, respectively. Once again, Coloma looked to be in the driver’s seat after the opening half but watched a second-straight game slip from their fingers over the closing sixteen minutes, as they would suffer another tough defeat, 55-47.

Coloma is currently 0-3 on the season and is 0-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference games. This week, the Comets will play in two contests; one at home and one on the road. They will have begun the week by traveling to Benton Harbor on Tuesday, Dec. 12, for a non-conference game with the Tigers, before hosting the Fennville Blackhawks in a conference showdown on Friday, Dec. 15.

Girls basketball begins new

season with losses

Last week, the Coloma Lady Comet basketball team took the court for a pair of games during their opening week on the hardwood, as they played in a pair of conference matchups to begin the campaign. When you look back at last year, the team’s schedule was curtailed due to a lack of players. Hopefully, this year, they can gain valuable experience by playing a full schedule.

In their first game of the week, which saw Coloma host the Lady Clippers of Martin in conference play on Tuesday, Dec. 5, the Lady Comets looked to get their season started on the right foot, despite their opponent being an eighteen-game winner last season. Unfortunately, it appeared that Martin came into the gymnasium in “midseason form” right off the bat, as the Lady Clippers turned an interesting game at the half into a rout, handing Coloma a tough loss, 61-22. Martin won the scoreboard battle throughout all four quarters, as the visitors came to play with their “A-game.”

Six players scored for Coloma. Andre’a Bale and Miryssa Nelson shared top scoring honors with six points each, while Kourtney Smith chipped in five. Other players finishing on the score sheet included McKinleigh Kraemer (2), Bethany Rose (2) and Tatum Arend (1 point).

In their game which saw Coloma host the Lady Bees of Bridgman in conference action on Thursday, Dec. 7, the Lady Comets looked to rebound from their opening night disappointment by swatting the visiting team, who went 16-5 last winter, with two of those victories coming against Coloma. It was a tight affair that saw neither team lead by more than single digits; ultimately, the ladies in orange and navy (Bridgman) came out with the win, 26-19. The game went back-and-forth throughout the night, but Bridgman was able to win the scoring battle in three of the four quarters.

Four players scored for Coloma. Miryssa Nelson was the leading scorer for the Lady Comets, finishing the night with nine points. Kourtney Smith chipped in five points. Other players finishing on the score sheet included Andre’a Bale (4) and McKinleigh Kraemer (1).

Coloma is currently 0-2 on the season and is 0-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference games. This week, the Lady Comets will play in a pair of contests, including one that will count towards the conference race. They will have begun the week by traveling to Bangor on Wednesday, Dec. 13, for a non-conference game with the Lady Vikings, before hosting the Lady Blackhawks of Fennville in a conference matchup on Friday, Dec. 15.

As always, GO GREEN! GO GOLD!
