Track and Field teams finish Top-10 at Regional competition

The Coloma Comet / Lady Comet track and field teams traveled to Bangor on Friday, May 17 for the MHSAA Division 3 regional meet, which featured a total field of 15 teams, each trying to get their runners qualified for next weekend’s state finals. When the final events were finished, the Comet men placed fifth with a total of 49 points while the Lady Comets finished ninth with a total of 45 points. A total of nine student-athletes will represent Coloma at the state finals, which will be held on Saturday, June 1 at Kent City High School.

On the men’s side, the Comets had a pair of individual champions in their respective events. Boden Genovese was a double winner, taking victories in the 800 meter run, with a time of 2:00.85, and the 1600 meter run, with a time of 4:27.18, while Fletcher Todd was the overall winner in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 51.95 seconds. Todd also qualified for state in two other individual events, the 200 meter dash, thanks to his runner-up finish, and the 100 meter dash, where he ended up in sixth position, but qualified with an additional qualifiers time. Also heading to state is the 1600 meter relay team, consisting of Cole Hartmann, Tucker Arend, Todd and Genovese, who placed fourth, but qualified, thanks to their fast time.

On the ladies side, the Lady Comets had one overall champion, thanks to their 400 meter relay team. The team, consisting of Arayah Davis, Shauntie Cobbs, Jayda Taylor and Brandy Starling, won the event, with a time of 50.96 seconds; the same four also made up the 800 meter relay team, which also qualified for state, with their runner-up result. Taylor qualified for state individually, with her runner-up finish in the 100 meter dash, and will be joined by Bria Starling, whose third-place leap in the long jump was good enough to earn additional qualifier status.

This week’s schedule has the Southwestern Athletic Conference championships at Gobles on Tuesday, May 21.

Baseball plays eight games with two victories

Coloma Comet varsity baseball team entered play last week with a 7-13 record. In their first game block of the week, which was a home, non-divisional conference doubleheader against the visiting Trailblazers of Saugatuck on Monday, May 13, the teams earned a split, with Saugatuck winning game one, 12-7, before Coloma took the nightcap, 11-4.

In game one, the Comets were held scoreless over the opening five innings and scored their seven runs over the final two innings. In game two, Coloma scored a whopping ten runs in the bottom of the opening frame, grabbing the commanding lead. The Trailblazers managed to outscore the Comets, 4-1, over the final three-and-a-half innings, but the game was long decided.

On Tuesday, May 14, the Comets had a home, conference divisional doubleheader against their rivals, the Watervliet Panthers. When the dust settled, Watervliet took home the dominating sweep handily, taking game one, 10-0, before winning the nightcap, 13-2.

In terms of individual and team statistics encompassing both games, Treyton Myers recorded the loss on the mound in game one, while Dakota Brown recorded the loss on the mound in game two. In game one, the offense managed two hits, a pair of singles from Dylan Groendyk and Maverick Kraemer. In game two, the offense managed six hits, with Myers recording a three-hit performance. Driving in the lone RBI was Jayelin Vawter.

In their third game block of the week, which was a road, non-conference doubleheader at Dowagiac on Thursday, May 16, the teams recorded a split, with Coloma winning game one, 8-0, before Dowagiac took the nightcap, 12-11. Garrett Wolfe earned the victory on the mound in game one, with a sixteen-strikeout performance. In game one, the offense managed ten hits, led by Williams’ two-hit performance, which included a double. In game two, the offense managed seven hits, with Maverick Kraemer and Vawter recording two hits each, while Dylan McCoy led the team with two RBI.

The Comets hosted a conference round-robin on Saturday, May 18, which featured teams from the league’s other two divisions, who finished in the same position in their respective division. In those games, Coloma played Constantine and Saugatuck for their two matchups, under sunny skies. When the dust settled, the Comets were defeated in both contests, as they suffered losses to Constantine, 12-9, and Saugatuck, 15-3.

Coloma is currently 10-19 on the season and finished 5-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference – Lakeshore games. This week, the Comets finish the dwindling regular season schedule with games at Delton Kellogg on Tuesday, May 21 and Lawton on Thursday, May 23.

Softball concludes six-game week

Last week, the Coloma Lady Comet varsity softball team managed to get all six of their scheduled games played, including the final two conference matchups of the year. In the closing stages of the season, the ladies are hoping to finish strong.

In a home, conference divisional doubleheader against one of their fiercest rivals, the Lady Panthers of Watervliet, on Tuesday, May 14, the Lady Comets recorded an important late-season sweep, as they won game one, 3-1, before taking the nightcap, 14-3.

In their second game block of the week, which was a road, non-conference doubleheader against the Dowagiac Lady Chieftains on Thursday, May 16, the Lady Comets, having seen their stock rise above the critical .500 mark, made the road trek to face a squad trending in the right direction, as well. When the dust settled, Dowagiac left the diamond with the sweep, winning game one, 11-2, before taking the nightcap, 8-4.

The Lady Comets traveled to Parchment on Saturday, May 18 for a conference round-robin. Thanks to a runner-up finish in their division, Coloma drew Parchment and Saugatuck for their two matchups. They finished with one win and one loss, defeating Saugatuck, 5-3, while falling to Parchment, 1-0.

The softball team is currently 16-17 on the season and finished 8-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference – Lakeshore games. This week, the Lady Comets are scheduled to have two game blocks, both of which will take place on the road. They will have made the road trip to Delton Kellogg on Tuesday, May 21, for a doubleheader. They will finish the week by competing in a doubleheader at Mattawan on Thursday, May 23.

Golf’s final SAC Jamboree

of the season

In the sixth conference jamboree of the season, which was hosted by Bridgman at Pebblewood Country Club on Tuesday, May 14, the Comet varsity golf team went up against players from the Lakeshore Division, including teams from Allegan, Bridgman, Gobles, Saugatuck, South Haven and Watervliet. Coloma finished in seventh place, with a team total of 228 strokes. Carter Crist was the top finisher for the Comets, with his score of 41 strokes over nine holes earning him a rare finish outside of the top ten.

This week, the golf team is scheduled to compete against all the players and teams from the league, with all-conference honors on the line in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championships, which were held at the Beeches Golf Club in South Haven on Tuesday, May 21.

Girls Soccer splits weekly action, enters postseason play this week

The Coloma Lady Comet varsity soccer team made their return to the pitch for more competition, as they played two matches over the course of just three days. The ladies were coming into play with a pair of victories on the season, which matches last year’s win total.

In their first match of the week, on Monday, May 13, Coloma hosted the visiting Lady Bulldogs of Covert for a non-conference tilt, in their second-to-last home match of the season. The ladies showed up, on both ends of the field, holding the visiting team to just one goal, while scoring four in the eighty minutes of action, to take the 4-1 victory.

The Lady Comets finished the week by traveling to Constantine on Wednesday, May 15, for an intra-conference match with the Lady Falcons. It was a tight affair all the way with those in attendance feeling like the ladies could put together their first winning streak of the campaign. However, when the eighty minutes were completed, Coloma was on the losing end, 3-2.

The girls soccer team is currently 3-11-1 on the season. This week they have two matches, including their first appearance in postseason play. Coloma hosted Parchment on Monday, May 20 and finish the week by traveling to Watervliet, on Thursday, May 23, for a district quarterfinal match. The winner will advance to the district semifinals, being held at Bridgman on Tuesday, May 28.
