Varsity football drops divisional matchup to Lawton
In their most recent game, a home contest against Lawton which was played on Friday, Oct. 11, the Coloma Comet varsity football team was trying to continue building their winning resume by pulling off their second straight victory and third win of the campaign. The visiting Lawton Blue Devils entered the night at 4-2, with their two losses coming against state power, Traverse City Saint Francis, and one of their bitter league rivals, Schoolcraft.
The Blue Devils, held to just three points in their loss at Schoolcraft, came out ready to play, and took their frustration out on the Comets, leaving town with the victory, 46-8. The highlight of the night came on defense, in the fourth quarter, with the Blue Devils driving inside the Coloma 20-yard line there was a bad exchange between the center and the quarterback. The play was live, one of the Lawton running backs attempted to make the recovery, but a defensive player made a nice hit, popping the ball into the air. The ball landed in the arms of Jaymes Phillips, who rumbled down the field, 75 yards, for the touchdown. The Comets went for the two-point conversion, which was successful, closing their scoring for the evening.
