Coloma boys, Watervliet girls hailed as victors in basketball rivalry games
For the second time this season, the Coloma and Watervliet basketball teams met for rivalry showdowns, this time on the floor in the Panther Gymnasium on Friday, Feb. 13. When these two Red Arrow rivals met in early January, neither the men’s nor the women’s game was a contest. In this installment of the battle, the result of the games didn’t change, despite higher totals on the scoreboard. In the first game of the night, the Lady Panthers reigned victorious, 63-23, before the Comet men answered the call in the nightcap, 69-43.
In the women’s game, it appeared it might follow a similar script to the first matchup, as the offenses ground the gears early on. Watervliet (8-10, 4-4) scored the first points nearly two minutes in, and it would remain that way for an additional three minutes. The Lady Panthers opened the contest by scoring five points, before Coloma (2-12, 1-6) finally got on the scoreboard nearly six minutes in. When the clock struck zero, the home team was in front, 11-4.
