As summer fades and autumn approaches, millions of migratory birds begin one of nature’s most remarkable journeys. Michigan sits along the Mississippi Flyway, making it an important stopover for species traveling south for the winter. Senior citizens can play an important role in helping these feathered travelers safely complete their migration.
One of the simplest ways to help is by providing fresh water. A clean birdbath gives migrating birds a place to drink and bathe, helping them restore energy after long flights. Refresh the water every day and scrub the basin regularly to reduce the spread of disease.
Bird feeders also provide valuable fuel. Black-oil sunflower seeds, suet, and nyjer seed are excellent choices for many migrating birds. Be sure to clean feeders every couple of weeks with a diluted bleach solution, rinsing them thoroughly before refilling. Clean feeders help prevent illnesses that can spread among birds gathering in one location.
