Just Joshin'
As each week comes and goes, I’m realizing more and more that Thursday doesn’t really care what else is happening around it. Two things we can always promise are that the paper comes out each week and time keeps on ticking, ticking, ticking.
I’ve been at the paper for six years, but seeing the whole operation through this new editor lens has made me realize just how steady the rhythm really is. We can be having a great week or a not-so-great week. Everything can fall perfectly into place or absolutely refuse to cooperate. Thursday never fails to come either way.
We go to print Wednesday (unless a holiday falls on Thursday), usually around one or two in the afternoon, which means every week slowly becomes a race toward that little finish line.
Along the way, decisions are made that most people will probably never think twice about. Which story leads the front page? Does that photo work better big or small? Can we squeeze one more story in? Does something need to wait until next week? Where did that ad go? Did I miss anything? Did I double up on something? Who knows sometimes.
