Kenneth and Leola Wendzel 60th wedding anniversary

Kenneth and Leola Wendzel of Bainbridge Township celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary

with two events. On July 22, 2016 they celebrated with their siblings with a formal dinner at the home of their daughter. On July 28, they celebrated with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at a cookout-pool party.  Kenneth Wendzel and the former Leola Weston were married July 28, 1956, at Salem Lutheran Church in Coloma.  Their children are Debbie (Jerry) Grieser, Lois Wendzel, Kim (Doug) Lane, Tom (Nancy) Wendzel all of Bainbridge Township and Tim (Kimberly) Wendzel of Coloma. They have 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  Ken and Leola have made their home in Bainbridge Township where they farmed until retiring in 1977. Ken also owned his own income tax business for over 40 years where Leola assisted until they retired in 2004. Kenneth also served his community for 30 years as a Berrien County Commissioner.  They have been long-time, active members at Grace Lutheran Church in St. Joseph. Ken and Leola enjoy supporting their grandchildren andgreat-grandchildren in whatever activities they participate in. They are devoted fans to the Watervliet football team and rarely miss a game. Ken and Leola enjoy spending time with family and friends and traveling.

Coloma Library News

Book Club

 The Coloma Library Book Club is meeting for a book discussion on Thursday, August 18 at 5:30 p.m. The title to read before the discussion is “Neverhome” by Laird Hunt.  Generally, depending on demand there are titles available for check-out at the front desk.  The book club regularly meets every other Thursday and is always looking for new members. Summer Reading Picnic

The Summer Reading Picnic will be Wednesday, August 17 at noon at Randall Park in Coloma. Prizes and hot dogs will be provided. All children who participated in the Summer Reading Program are invited to come to the park for a fun time. Feel free to bring a dish to pass. There will be no Story Hour on Wednesday, August 17.

RECENT RIBBON CUTTING… for Artes and Craft located in Hartford Town-ship. Friends and Cornerstone Women's Business Center were on hand to wish owners Pat Rose and Paul Barbary well on their new business. Artes and Craft officially opened on July 1, 2016 and features multi-cultural clothing, homemade soaps and incenses, unique je-welry, herbs, spices and candles. This entrepreneurial team opened the store to offer a place for their customers to shop, worship and celebrate. “We wanted a venue to celebrate and respect the diversity of reli-gions,” said Barbary.

Lakeland Hospital, Watervliet Auxiliary holding Quarter Auction fundraiser

 On Thursday, August 25, 2016 the Lakeland Hospital, Watervliet Auxiliary is holding a new type of fundraiser. The event is a Quarter Auction being held at the Coloma FOP Lodge, 3470 Angling Road, Coloma.  New items will be auctioned off, for bids ranging from one to four quarters, depending on the value of the item. After bids are closed, the auctioneer will draw a random numbered ball, and the person with the matching numbered paddle will win the item, provided he or she has bid on it.  Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for preview of merchandise, and the auction starts at 6:30 p.m.  There is a $5.00 admission fee and snacks will be available for purchase. Retirement party for Watervliet District Library Director

 Please join us for a retirement party honoring Lois Hartman, Watervliet District Library’s Director for 22 years.  The party will be Monday, August 29, 2016 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the Watervliet Library Community Room, 333 N. Main Street, Watervliet.

Police and Fire Reports

Coloma Township Police Activity

  On August 6, shortly before 4:00 p.m., a Coloma Township Police Officer stopped a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle involved in a prior incident.  The driver, a 43-year-old Coloma man was issued on a misdemeanor appearance citation for driving with a revoked license.  The vehicle was turned over to the registered owner.  The previous incident remains under investigation.    While on foot patrol in downtown Coloma on the evening of August 6, a Coloma Township officer received information about a wanted subject in the area.  The subject, a 28-year-old Hagar Township man, was located a short time later and was taken into custody without incident.  He was lodged at the Berrien County Jail.

Watervliet City Police Activity

  For the month of July, the Watervliet Police Department responded to 123 calls for service and assisted other agencies 16 times.  In all, there were four felony arrests and four misdemeanor arrests.   Officers made a total of 73 traffic stops and issued 11 traffic citations.  They are working on obtaining two felony arrest warrants and four misdemeanor warrants.
