Around 5:00 a.m. last Thursday, the legislature passed a budget for the upcoming fiscal year after months of controversy and partisan games. Senate Republicans sought a bipartisan victory, but were clear from the beginning of this process — we would not support a spending plan based on more debt and higher taxes. Yet, this is precisely what was put before us in the early hours of the morning just moments before voting on a more than $80 billion state budget.
