Watervliet Cross-Country
Two members of the Watervliet varsity cross-country teams traveled to Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn on Saturday, Nov. 1 for the MHSAA Division 3 state finals, where the maroon and white representatives gathered at the starting line with over 250 of their closest friends. The freshman and sophomore who qualified this year continued the tradition, dating back to 2011, of a Lady Panther / Panther lacing their running shoes on the final weekend.
In the men’s race, Sam Casiano crossed the finish line with his 97th place time of 17:00 (his personal best time); while in the women’s race Miranda Lowell crossed the finish line with her 210th place time of 22:46.
Watervliet Volleyball
The Watervliet varsity volleyball team traveled to Buchanan on Tuesday, Oct. 28, for a non-conference match with the ladies looking to finish the regular season on a positive note, but knowing they’d have to bring their best on the road. The Lady Bucks entered the night with sixteen wins on the year, including winning five of their last six matches, so this would be a test for the maroon and white. In the end, the Lady Panthers fell in straight sets: 25-7, 25-13, 25-10.
It was a slow start to the night for Watervliet, especially in the first set, as the ladies struggled to get the offense going. In sets two and three, the Lady Panthers were able to string points together and put up some big blocks, slowing down the opposing attack.
