Coloma Volleyball heads into postseason play

Last week, the Coloma Lady Comet varsity volleyball team returned to the court for their final week

of regular season action, as the team participated in just a single non-conference quad. Despite not being able to score a conference championship this fall, it has been quite a successful season for the ladies, as they have recorded twenty-six match victories to date.

In their lone weekly effort, the Lady Comets traveled to Stevensville Lakeshore, on Wednesday, Oct. 25, for a quad that featured the Lady Lancers, in addition to the Lady Bees of Bridgman and the Lady Vikings of Niles. For the evening, Coloma surprisingly went 0-3, suffering straight set defeats to Niles and Stevensville Lakeshore, while falling in a third-set tiebreaker to Bridgman.

Coloma is currently 26-13-1 on the season. This week, the Lady Comets schedule features district action, with Coloma hosting an MHSAA Division 3 district that will also include Bangor, Bloomingdale, Hartford and Watervliet. The ladies received a bye into the semifinals, where they will have faced Watervliet on Wednesday, Nov. 1. Should they be victorious, they would play for a district championship, one night later, on Thursday, Nov. 2.

Boden Genovese to represent Coloma Cross-Country Program at State meet

The Coloma Comet / Lady Comet varsity cross-country runners continued their season-long running calendar, as their quest to represent the green and gold at state was tested, when they competed in regional competition.

In the Division 3 regional meet, which took place at Portage West Middle School on Saturday, Oct. 28, the runners lined up alongside athletes representing seventeen other area schools. The competition was fierce, with the goals of everyone set on running the following weekend at the state finals. In terms of team results, the Coloma men finished in 13th place out of sixteen teams, with a total of 281 team points, while the Coloma ladies did not have enough qualifying runners (five) to post a team score.

In terms of individual results, the top-five finishers for the Coloma men included Boden Genovese, whose time of 16:34 earned him a runner-up finish overall, qualifying him for the state meet this weekend. He was followed across the finish line by Aiden Cripe (17th place, 17:46), Eddy Granados (79th place, 20:45), Tucker Arend (92nd place, 21:58 – a PR) and Jayden Christie (94th place, 22:26 – a PR). Also competing for the Comets were Cole Brown (102nd place, 24:24 – a PR) and Matt Martel (103rd place, 24:24 – a PR). The Coloma ladies had two runners compete on the morning, with McKinleigh Kraemer finishing in 54th place, with a time of 24:45 (a PR), while Melody Dixon finished in 80th place, with a time of 33:07.

The Coloma Press Box congratulates Boden on qualifying for the state finals! He will run against the state’s best in Division 3, on Saturday, Nov. 4, with the event being contested at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.
