Coloma Boys Basketball

The Coloma varsity boys basketball team traveled to Bangor on Tuesday, Dec. 30, to play in their Holiday Tournament against Eau Claire, looking to conclude the calendar year with a third consecutive victory. After trailing early, the men found a way to bring home the win, 53-50.

SINK IT… Coloma’s Treyton Myers (22) goes up for the shot, hoping to draw contact from the Eau Claire defender and make it a three-point opportunity at the basket. Myers finished the afternoon in Bangor’s holiday tournament, as one of three Comets scoring in double figures, with 11 points, as Coloma grabbed a hard-fought win over the Beavers, 53-50.  The Comets (4-3) trailed by eight points early on, before making up the deficit and holding on in a seesaw affair. The Beavers would start strong, grabbing a 16-8 lead after the opening eight minutes, before those wearing green and gold stormed back, taking a one-point halftime lead, 26-25, by outscoring the opponent, 18-9, in the second quarter. Both teams scored 16 points in the third quarter before Coloma closed strong, winning the fourth-quarter war, 11-9.

Kameron Baker was the leading scorer for the Comets, netting 14 points in a winning effort, and was joined in double figures by AJ Moore, with 13 points, and Treyton Myers, with 11 points.

The boys basketball team hosted Saint Joseph on Saturday, Jan. 3, for a non-conference game, looking to start the newest calendar year with the same level of success they had before the ball dropped. Despite a ferocious rally late, they’d fall in a thriller, 62-60.

The Comets (4-4) will live to regret their play in the first half in this one, where an ice-cold start put them in a hole they couldn’t climb out of. The Bears led after the opening eight minutes, 13-7, before an 18-6 run in the second quarter gave the visiting team a 31-13 lead at the half. Despite trailing by as many as 26 points in the second half, Coloma cut their deficit to 49-36 after three quarters, then won the fourth-quarter scoring battle, 24-13, but would fall just short.

AJ Moore was the leading scorer in this game for the Comets, netting 21 points and was joined in double figures by Alijah Scott, with 12 points, and Xavier Pompey, with 11 points.

Coloma Wrestling

The Coloma varsity wrestling team traveled to Mendon on Saturday, Jan. 3, to compete in the Mendon Invitational, a team tournament featuring eight schools from across Southwest Michigan. The day proved fruitful for the wrestlers, coming home as the tournament runner-up.

The Comets (6-13) won three of their five duals on the day, defeating Battle Creek Harper Creek (44-30), Cassopolis (46-36), and Niles (54-27), but were on the losing end against the host team (34-33) and Olivet (63-17).

Brody Ashley and Joe Clayton went 5-0 as individuals, with Ashley securing the Most Outstanding Wrestler honor for the lower weights. Kaleb Adams, Bryce Cartwright, and KJ Young went 4-1 for the tournament.
